Finding the beat
The steady pulse underneath every piece of music.
2 min read
Under every tune there’s a steady pulse — the beat you’d tap your foot to. Keeping that pulse even is one of the most musical things you can do, even before you play fast or loud.
Counting in fours
Most music you’ll meet groups the beat into fours: 1, 2, 3, 4, then around again. The first beat usually feels a touch stronger — that’s what gives music its lift.
Tip: Count out loud, slowly and evenly, and clap on each number. The Rhythm tap exercise on the Practice page lets you play along with a metronome.
