The Three Shades of Minor: Natural, Harmonic & Melodic
Why minor keys have three distinct scale flavors and how to recognize them.
4 min read
While major keys always use the same bright pattern (W-W-H-W-W-W-H), minor keys are versatile. Depending on the musical feeling and harmonic resolution needed, composers choose between three minor scales.
1. Natural Minor (Aeolian)
The standard minor scale, matching the key signature of its relative major. It sounds ancient, calm, and slightly melancholic.
2. Harmonic Minor
To create a stronger pull back to the tonic (leading tone), we raise the 7th degree by a half step. This creates an exotic, dramatic sound with a 1.5-step jump between degrees 6 and 7.
3. Melodic Minor
To smooth out the large jump in the harmonic minor, classical composers raised both the 6th and 7th degrees on the way up, returning to natural minor on the way down.
