Rhythm

Note values, simply

How long each note lasts.

2 min read

Rhythm is about how long notes last. The most common lengths are easy to feel by counting a steady pulse.

  • Whole note — hold for 4 beats
  • Half note — hold for 2 beats
  • Quarter note — 1 beat

Same note, three lengths: a whole note (open), a half note (open with a stem), and a quarter note (filled).

Tap a steady 1, 2, 3, 4. A quarter note gets one tap, a half note holds for two, and a whole note holds for all four.

Tip: Counting out loud while you play is the single best habit for steady rhythm.
