7th Chords: Color and Tension in Harmony

From blues and jazz to modern pop — how 4-note seventh chords bring rich emotion.

4 min read

Basic triads (root + 3rd + 5th) sound solid and grounded. When you stack one more 3rd on top, you get a 7th chord (1-3-5-7). That extra note adds warmth, sparkle, or bluesy tension.

The Main Flavors of 7th Chords

  • Major 7th (maj7: 1-3-5-7): Dreamy, airy, nostalgic. Common in lofi, jazz, and indie pop (e.g. Cmaj7 = C-E-G-B).
  • Dominant 7th (7: 1-3-5-b7): Energetic, bluesy, pulling toward resolution (e.g. G7 = G-B-D-F).
  • Minor 7th (m7: 1-b3-5-b7): Mellow, moody, soulful (e.g. Am7 = A-C-E-G).
