When you feel stuck

Plateaus are part of learning, not a sign that you lack talent.

3 min read

Sooner or later a week comes when nothing improves. This happens to everyone who learns an instrument, and it is usually the point just before something clicks.

Things that actually help

  • Shrink the problem: practise two bars, not the whole piece.
  • Slow down further than feels necessary.
  • Go back to something you already play well — it reminds you that progress is real.
  • Take two days off. Skills consolidate while you are not playing.

What not to conclude

A hard week is not evidence about your talent. Nobody learns in a straight line, and the people who end up playing well are simply the ones who kept coming back.

Tip: Progress is easiest to see backwards. Play something from a month ago and notice how much easier it feels now.
